Construction of the tower began in the IX century, with its actual final form obtained in 1513. The Campanile was damaged by lightning numerous times before being equipped with a lightning rod in 1776. It was then completely destroyed with the 1902 collapse and rebuilt exactly as it was in 10 years. Interestingly, the 1912 inauguration ceremony took place exactly 1000 years after the original tower foundations had allegedly been laid.
